The Challenge

Fusing a bold, high impact retro aesthetic with the gentle, ethical messaging of Peace.

The primary challenge for PEACE COFFEE was to create a brand identity that felt authentically ethical and community-focused without being visually weak or cliché (avoiding overly gentle, natural, or watercolor styles). The design needed to be bold and high-impact enough for retail shelves and signage while maintaining the lighthearted, friendly tone implied by its name and mission. A crucial technical hurdle was designing the Turtle/Peace Sign Mascot so that the negative space formed the peace sign clearly and cleanly, ensuring the icon remained scalable and instantly legible across small applications like bags and stickers.

Our approach

integrating a peace symbol into the mascot shell, and using custom, heavy typography.

The strategic approach focused on Mid-Century Modern Simplicity and Symbolic Integration. We chose the high-contrast Red and Cream palette to give the brand a strong, appealing, and enduring retro personality, making it stand out among modern competitors. The centerpiece of the strategy was the creation of the Turtle/Peace Sign Mascot, a unique symbol that instantly communicates the brand’s identity and values through clever negative space. We paired this mascot with a custom, extra-bold Slab-Serif font for the wordmark, using its considerable visual weight to give the name a feeling of quality and permanence, perfectly balancing the playful nature of the turtle with the seriousness of the business.

project breakdown

Designing the unique Turtle Peace Mark, developing custom heavy typography.

The project commenced with Mascot Concept and Negative Space Design, meticulously crafting the turtle’s silhouette to ensure the peace sign was perfectly and clearly carved out by the negative space within the shell. This was followed by Custom Typography Development, where the heavy Slab-Serif font for “PEACE COFFEE” was drawn or modified to be exceptionally bold, giving it the required vintage, high-impact presence. The final stage was Color Contrast and Lockup Finalization, rigorously testing the Red and Cream combination to confirm maximum readability and visual warmth, while confirming the perfect centered vertical alignment between the mascot and the stacked wordmark for optimal brand cohesion.
